While Batman is certainly a character who sells a lot more comics than Wonder Woman, it still seems strange that DC decided to launch Stan Lee’s debut at DC with Joe Kubert instead of one of the hottest artists in the business in 2002: Jim Lee. Kubert was immensely talented and a certifiable legend, but he did not have the cultural reach that Jim Lee possesses. It was one of the early mistakes made as DC launched the Just Imagine line.
The first half of the book takes place in Peru. Maria Mendoza is the daughter of a local judge who is intent on defending ancient Incan sites from foreign incursion. The main problem is one Armando Guitez, a money man who effectively rules the land with an iron fist.
Once the runes he sought are found, he grows more murderous. He slays several locals who want him to stop hurting their land. From there he murders Maria’s father as well. She’s saved by Steve Trevor, one of his archaeologists who has already sent two of the runes north to Los Angeles.
